Sunday 17

This morning the streets are empty, except for the derelicts and piles of rubbish. One man huddled in the doorway asked ‘You know what day it is?’ ‘Sunday.’

Today I will do nothing. The aimless nightlife for the daylight people, who have no idea how to behave after the sun has set, has evaporated in this empty dawn.

A quick journey to the market at Camden Lock: bought wooden models of fighter planes for a painting of a child’s bed in the Glasgow exhibition; then over to the nursery to buy tulips, narcissus, and hyacinth for the balcony garden.

At eight I went up to Hampstead Heath and walked in the moonlight until midnight. The full moon was so bright it blinded my eyes. No bonfires or gypsies.

Worried about the film. Insuperable barriers of subject, finance, the weather, my health.

Back at 12:30. HB’s voice on the answerphone.
